European Alternatives to SendGrid & Mailgun: 7 EU Email APIs (2026)
Yes, there are good European alternatives to SendGrid and Mailgun. For EU ownership and EU-only hosting, look at Lettermint (Netherlands), Scaleway Transactional Email and Sweego (France). For transactional and marketing email from one European company, Brevo or Mailjet. If you only need EU data residency and are comfortable with a US parent, Amazon SES in Frankfurt or Mailgun's EU region keep message data in Europe, but the company remains subject to US law. Checked against each vendor's own pages on 3 November 2026.
Teams look for a European email API for one of two reasons, and they lead to different answers. Data residency means your email data is stored and processed in the EU, which several US providers now offer. EU ownership means the company itself is European, with no US parent, so US laws that reach US companies' data wherever it is stored do not apply. Decide which one you need before you compare prices.

EU-owned and EU-hosted
1. Lettermint: best for strict EU sovereignty
A Dutch company with no US parent, hosting in the Netherlands with backups in Germany and a subprocessor list that stays inside the EU. It is ISO 27001 certified and signs an Article 28 data processing agreement automatically. The free plan covers 300 emails a month and paid plans start at €10 a month for 10,000 emails, with inbound on paid plans (Lettermint pricing, subprocessors).
Watch for: it is a young company with a shorter track record than the incumbents.
2. Scaleway Transactional Email: best for teams already on a European cloud
Part of French cloud provider Scaleway (Iliad group), with email data processed in its Paris region only and billed pay as you go. It fits naturally if your application already runs on Scaleway (Scaleway TEM).
Watch for: there is no inbound email, and webhooks are newer and route through Scaleway's own event service rather than to any URL.
3. Sweego: best value French option
Run by Lille-based Mindbaz, a deliverability specialist, and hosted in France. The free plan sends 100 emails a day with unlimited domains, webhooks and 7-day logs; paid plans start at €8 a month billed yearly for 20,000 emails and add inbound routing (Sweego pricing).
Watch for: we found no ISO 27001 or SOC 2 claim, which some procurement checklists require.
4. Brevo: best for transactional and marketing from one EU company
Paris-based Brevo stores data in the EU, on its own servers in France and Germany and on Google Cloud in Belgium, and is ISO 27001:2022 certified. It handles transactional API, SMTP, an inbound parse webhook and full marketing campaigns, so one European vendor can cover both streams (Brevo data storage, Brevo security).
Watch for: part of the hosting is on Google Cloud, a US provider, and pricing is built around marketing rather than developer volume. See our Brevo pricing breakdown.
5. Mailjet: best for certification checklists
A French brand owned by Swedish Sinch, hosted on Google Cloud in Frankfurt and Belgium, with ISO 27001, ISO 27701 and SOC 2. The free plan sends 6,000 emails a month (200 a day) and Starter is $9 a month for 8,000 (Mailjet pricing, security).
Watch for: Sinch also owns Mailgun, whose operating company is American; check which Sinch entity you contract with if ownership matters to you.
US providers with an EU region
These keep message data in Europe, which satisfies many residency requirements. The provider is still a US company, so it is subject to the US CLOUD Act, which requires US providers to produce data in their possession, custody or control wherever it is stored. Transfers to them rely on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework or standard contractual clauses.
6. Amazon SES in an EU region: cheapest at volume
At $0.10 per 1,000 emails, SES in Frankfurt or Ireland is the cheapest option here by a wide margin (SES pricing). You build bounce handling, suppression and dashboards yourself, so the saving is paid in engineering time.
7. Mailgun EU region: the easiest move if you are already on Mailgun
The EU region is available on every Mailgun plan, from the free 100 emails a day and Basic at $15 a month for 10,000. Message data stays in the region, but account data, API keys and domain names are replicated globally (Mailgun regions). Full plan costs are in our Mailgun pricing guide.
What about SendGrid, Postmark and the rest?
- SendGrid offers EU data residency only on Pro plans and above, with a dedicated EU IP and an EU subuser, and some features (Marketing Campaigns, validation) are not supported in that mode (Twilio data residency FAQ).
- MailerSend hosts on Google Cloud in Belgium, but its contracting entity is MailerSend, Inc. in New York, so it belongs with the US-parent group.
- Postmark stores data in the US and says it has no plans for EU servers (Postmark EU privacy).
- Mailtrap currently stores data in the US.
The GDPR rules that make this matter
- GDPR Chapter V (Articles 44–49) allows personal data to leave the EEA only with an adequacy decision, appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses, or a narrow derogation (GDPR text).
- Schrems II (CJEU, July 2020) struck down the EU-US Privacy Shield over US surveillance law, while keeping standard contractual clauses subject to case-by-case checks.
- The EU-US Data Privacy Framework was adopted by the Commission on 10 July 2023, letting self-certified US companies receive EU data (European Commission).
- The DPF survived its first challenge when the EU General Court dismissed Latombe v Commission on 3 September 2025, but an appeal to the Court of Justice (C-703/25 P) is pending. That uncertainty is the main reason teams choose EU-owned providers rather than relying on the framework.
Which one should you choose?
- No US company anywhere in the chain: Lettermint, then Scaleway.
- Lowest cost with an EU-owned provider: Sweego or Scaleway.
- Transactional and marketing from one European vendor: Brevo, then Mailjet.
- Inbound email and webhooks with EU-only data: Lettermint, then Sweego.
- Certifications for procurement: Mailjet, then Brevo.
- Residency is enough and cost matters most: Amazon SES in Frankfurt; if you are already on Mailgun, switch to its EU region.
We have left our own product, Bluey Email, off this list: the ranking is about European ownership and data residency, and we would rather not grade ourselves on it. If you are comparing developer APIs more broadly, see the best email APIs for developers.
FAQ
Is there a good European alternative to SendGrid or Mailgun?
Yes. Lettermint (Netherlands), Scaleway Transactional Email and Sweego (France) are EU-owned and EU-hosted transactional APIs; Brevo and Mailjet are European and also cover marketing email.
Does using an EU region make a US email provider GDPR compliant?
EU hosting helps, but the provider remains a US company subject to US law. Most rely on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework or standard contractual clauses for any transfers. Whether that is enough is a decision for your data protection officer.
What is the cheapest EU email API?
Among EU-owned providers, Sweego starts at 8 euros a month billed yearly for 20,000 emails, and Lettermint at 10 euros a month for 10,000. Amazon SES in an EU region is cheaper per email at $0.10 per 1,000, but Amazon is a US company.
Which European email APIs support inbound email?
Lettermint and Sweego offer inbound on paid plans, and Brevo has an inbound parse webhook. Scaleway's transactional email service does not support inbound.
Is Mailjet European?
Mailjet started in France and is now owned by Sinch, a Swedish company. Its data is hosted on Google Cloud in Frankfurt and Belgium.
