- $14.95/mo for 100,000 transactional emails
- SMTP + REST, SPF/DKIM domain authentication, suppression handling
- Marketing campaigns billed separately — no shared quota
- Full analytics and event webhooks on the entry tier
The same API, without the shared volume trap
Twilio SendGrid is the default answer for transactional email at scale. Bluey matches the SMTP and REST surface at a fraction of the price up to 2.5M emails a month — and does not make your marketing and transactional sends compete for the same quota.
- $19.95/mo for 50,000; Pro is $89.95/mo at 100,000
- Marketing and transactional sends share one monthly volume limit
- Dedicated IP is a Pro-tier requirement, not an option, on higher plans
- Email validation is sold separately from the sending plan
SendGrid's Email API starts at $19.95/mo for 50,000 emails, with Pro at $89.95/mo for 100,000 plus a dedicated IP. Bluey's transactional Essentials tier is $9.95 for 50,000 and $14.95 for 100,000, and Bluey Pro is $49.95 at 100,000 with subusers and a 7-day activity feed. The structural difference matters more than the price: on SendGrid's API plans, marketing and transactional emails draw on the same monthly volume, so a campaign send can eat the headroom your password resets need. Pick SendGrid if you need proven multi-million-per-day scale, Twilio-native SMS, or an enterprise contract; pick Bluey if you want the same API surface, separate marketing and transactional capacity, and a bill roughly half the size at 50,000 emails and a fraction of it at 100,000.
The boring details, side by side.
Three things that come up in every conversation.
Your resets stop competing with your campaigns
On SendGrid's Email API plans, a marketing blast and a password reset draw from the same monthly allowance. Send a big campaign near the end of a cycle and your transactional headroom goes with it. Bluey meters the two separately, so operational email is never at the mercy of a marketing decision.
Roughly half the bill at the same volume
100,000 transactional emails is $14.95 on Bluey Essentials against $89.95 on SendGrid Pro. SendGrid publishes no Essentials tier at that volume, so Pro is the route — and it does not publish its overage rates either, which are disclosed inside the account rather than on the pricing page.
One dashboard for both halves of your email
Most teams end up running a marketing tool and a transactional provider side by side: two bills, two sending reputations, two places to look when something breaks. Bluey sends both from one account with one reputation to manage.
When SendGrid is the better choice.
SendGrid is the incumbent for good reasons, and there are cases where it is clearly the right call.
Below a few million sends a month, most of what you are paying SendGrid for is headroom you will not use. That is exactly the range where Bluey is a straight substitute at a fraction of the price.
Switching from SendGrid? Here is the short version.
SendGrid to Bluey is a credentials swap, not a rebuild. The SMTP interface and the REST send call map almost one to one, so most teams are switched over in an afternoon.

Is Bluey cheaper than SendGrid?
At the volumes most teams actually send, yes. 50,000 emails a month is $9.95 on Bluey Essentials against $19.95 on SendGrid Essentials. At 100,000 the comparison is $14.95 against $89.95, because SendGrid publishes no Essentials tier at that volume — Pro is the route, and it bundles a dedicated IP you may not want yet. SendGrid becomes competitive at scales where you would be negotiating a custom contract anyway.
Do marketing emails count against my transactional limit on Bluey?
No, and this is the main structural difference. Bluey meters marketing campaigns and transactional API sends separately. On SendGrid's Email API plans they share one monthly volume, which means a large campaign can consume the allowance your operational email depends on.
Can I keep using SMTP rather than rewriting to a REST API?
Yes. Bluey exposes both an SMTP relay and a REST API on every transactional tier, including the $4 entry plan. For most SendGrid migrations the change is a host, a username and a password.
What happens to my sending reputation when I switch?
Reputation attaches to your domain and your IP. Re-authenticate the domain with SPF and DKIM on Bluey, then ramp volume over a few days rather than cutting everything over at once. If you were on a dedicated IP at SendGrid, treat the new IP as cold and warm it. Done in that order, a migration is usually reputation-neutral.
Does Bluey offer a dedicated IP like SendGrid Pro?
Yes, as an add-on rather than a plan requirement. Worth knowing: a dedicated IP is only an advantage above roughly 100,000 emails a month with consistent volume. Below that, a well-managed shared pool almost always delivers better, because there is not enough traffic to establish a reputation on your own IP.
Does SendGrid include a CRM or landing pages?
No. SendGrid's Marketing Campaigns product handles campaigns and basic automation as a separate purchase, but there is no built-in CRM and no landing-page builder. Bluey includes both on the marketing side of the same account.
