Welcome email series: templates + examples
A welcome series is 2–3 automatic emails sent right after someone joins your list. Email 1 (immediately) introduces who you are — from a real person, not a coupon. Email 2 (day 2) delivers your best useful thing. Email 3 (day 4–5) makes one clear offer. Copy the templates below and change the words.
A welcome series is the first thing anyone should automate — it is part of the core set in our guide to email automation for beginners. New subscribers are paying more attention right now than they ever will again.
The one mistake to avoid
Don't lead with the discount.
“The biggest mistake in welcome flows? Leading with the discount and nothing else. The 10% off code shows up, the brand never actually introduces itself, and now you've trained that subscriber that you're a coupon, not a brand.”
If the first thing you ever say is “10% off,” you have taught people to wait for the next code. Introduce yourself first. The offer is a reward for reading, not the reason for the email.
“An actual welcome email that comes from a person, preferably the founder or CEO.”
Email 1 — The handshake (send immediately)
Who you are, why you exist, what happens next.
Email 2 — Be useful (day 2)
Give before you ask.
This email earns the right to sell later. It proves you know something worth reading.
Email 3 — One clear offer (day 4–5)
Now you've earned it, make one ask.
Timing and settings
Fast, then slow down.
- Email 1: immediately on signup (within minutes).
- Email 2: ~2 days later.
- Email 3: ~4–5 days after signup.
- Exit rule: if they buy, drop them out of the series.
Welcome series checklist
Common questions
How many emails should a welcome series have?
Two or three is plenty for most small businesses. It's better to send three good emails than seven forgettable ones.
Should I put a discount in the welcome email?
Not in the first one. Leading with a discount trains people to see you as a coupon rather than a brand. Introduce yourself first, then offer it later as a thank-you.
Who should the welcome email come from?
A real person — ideally the founder. It reads like a human wrote it, because one did, and it gets replies you can learn from.
What if someone buys halfway through the series?
Drop them out of it. Set an exit rule so buyers stop getting “please buy” emails and move into your post-purchase flow instead.
How do I know it's working?
Watch the click rate on email 1 and how many people from the series buy within 30 days. Change one thing at a time — usually the subject line first.
