Migration guide

Twenty years of loyalty, and a bill to match

Constant Contact accounts are usually simple — a list, some campaigns, maybe one automation — which makes this one of the fastest migrations on this page. Often a single day.

On Constant Contact~$425/mo
On Bluey$36/mo

25,000 contacts, 100,000 emails/month · Typical migration: 1–2 days of work

In short

Constant Contact migrations are typically the quickest, because the accounts are usually straightforward: contacts, lists and a small number of campaigns, with little or no complex automation to rebuild. Contacts, custom fields and the unsubscribe list export as CSV. Most teams finish in one to two days. At 25,000 contacts sending 100,000 emails a month, Constant Contact Standard is around $425 against $36 on Bluey Grow — one of the widest gaps in the category, because Constant Contact's per-contact pricing climbs steeply and its entry tiers are small.

What transfers, and what you rebuild

Stated up front, because finding out mid-migration is how a two-day job becomes a two-week one.

The migration plan, in order

  1. 1Day 1 — before any send
Authenticate your sending domainPublish SPF, DKIM and, if you use one, DMARC records for the domain you will send from. Gmail and Yahoo have required authentication and one-click unsubscribe from bulk senders since February 2024, and an unauthenticated first send from a new platform is the fastest route to the spam folder. This is a DNS change and takes about fifteen minutes; allow up to a few hours for propagation.
  2. 2Day 1
Export contacts, custom fields and the do-not-mail listConstant Contact's export is simple. The one thing people miss is the do-not-mail list — export it separately and import it into Bluey before contacts, so opted-out addresses are suppressed on arrival.
  3. 3Day 1
Rebuild your welcome email and any autorespondersMost Constant Contact accounts have very little automation, which is why this migration is quick. If all you have is a welcome email, Bluey's templated welcome series is an upgrade you can build in under an hour.
  4. 4Day 1–2
Move templates and formsExport template HTML and import it, then rebuild signup forms in Bluey and update your website embed. Send yourself a test and check it on a phone.
  5. 5Day 2
Decide what to do about eventsIf you use Constant Contact's event registration tool, there is no direct equivalent. A Bluey landing page plus a form covers simple registrations; for ticketing or paid events, use a dedicated tool and connect it through Zapier.
  6. 6Week 1–2
Run Bluey and Constant Contact in parallelSplit the audience rather than duplicating it: send to one segment from Bluey and leave the rest on Constant Contact. You get a like-for-like comparison of delivery, engagement and cost on your own data, and nobody receives the same campaign twice. Do not run both against the same contacts — that is the one way to make a careful migration look sloppy to your readers.
  7. 7Week 2 — gradually
Ramp volume rather than switching itStart with your most engaged segment — people who opened or clicked in the last 30 days — and increase volume over several days. Receiving servers judge a new sending pattern partly on engagement, so leading with your best contacts builds reputation, while leading with your whole list including two-year-dormant addresses damages it. If you were on a dedicated IP, treat the new one as cold and warm it deliberately.

Mistakes people make leaving Constant Contact

Each of these is recoverable, and each is much cheaper to avoid than to fix.

Leaving the suppression list behindExporting subscribers without also exporting unsubscribes, bounces and complaints is the single most common migration error. The result is that people who opted out of Constant Contact receive your first Bluey campaign — which is a compliance breach in most markets and a fast way to breach Gmail's 0.3% complaint threshold on your very first send. Export suppressions and import them before anything else.
Overlooking the event registration toolNonprofits and community organisations often use Constant Contact's events feature without thinking of it as part of their email platform. There is no equivalent in Bluey. Decide on a replacement before you cancel, not when the next event comes round.
Importing the whole list, including the dead partA migration is the best opportunity you will get to drop contacts who have not engaged in a year or more. Bringing them across because storage is free is a mistake: they do not open, some addresses have gone stale and now hard-bounce, and a few have become spam traps. They will not cost you money on send-based billing, but they will cost you deliverability on the send that matters most — your first.
Carrying across a list that was built years agoLong-standing Constant Contact accounts often hold contacts collected before current consent expectations. Under GDPR, CASL and similar regimes, age is not consent. Migrating is the right moment to re-permission an old list rather than quietly continuing to mail it.

Migration FAQ

How long does migrating from Constant Contact take?

Usually one to two days, which makes it the fastest migration on this site. Constant Contact accounts tend to be simple — a list, some campaigns, perhaps one autoresponder — so there is very little to rebuild.

How much will I save?

At 25,000 contacts sending 100,000 emails a month, roughly $425 on Constant Contact Standard against $36 on Bluey Grow. It is one of the largest gaps in the category, because Constant Contact's per-contact pricing rises steeply and its included volumes are small.

What happens to my event registrations?

There is no direct equivalent in Bluey. A landing page plus a form handles simple RSVPs well. For ticketing, payments or capacity management, use a dedicated events tool and connect it to Bluey through Zapier so registrants still land in your list.

My list is very old. Can I still email it?

Legally that depends on how consent was obtained and on your market — CASL, GDPR and the Australian Spam Act all treat old implied consent differently, and none of them treat age as consent. Practically, a list that has not been mailed properly in years will bounce and complain heavily. Re-permission it, or send only to the portion that has engaged recently, and suppress the rest.

Will my templates come across?

Export the HTML and import it into Bluey's composer. Constant Contact templates are usually simple, so they generally come across cleanly. Send a test to yourself and check it on mobile before sending to anyone else.
